Just picked up a Wheeler and doing a good once over. Found some very bad corrosion on the lower rudder hinge so we thought we should dig into everything. Can someone tell me the torque for the main wing bolts please?

Thanks

Welcome to the forums and congrats on your Express! Love to hear more about what you got, how it's equipped, and what part of the country you're in.

We purchased our Series 90 about 18 months ago so I don't have anywhere near the experience some of the other folks here, but it looks like the torque on those spar pin bolts are 80 in-lb.

Here's a link to an assembly manual from 1993 for the CT model: https://www.express-builder.com/documen ... l/sec8.pdf I pulled that torque from Step 8 on page 8.300-7. Maybe they don't need really high torque since the steel spar pins and the spar carry through are what's carrying the load and these bolts just keep the pins in place.

Enjoy your Express!

Phil,

Thank you very much for the reply. I am looking forward to many hours in the Wheeler and hopefully meeting many other owners.

Phil,

Sorry I did not give a full reply. Our Express came from Middlesboro KY in June. It is equipped nicely for a 95 but needs a panel upgrade at some point. We found some very bad corrosion on the lower rudder hinge and had to replace. Also the paint in completely falling off. The plane needed some TLC for sure. My son is an A/P and specializes on Experimental work so we are doing a complete go over. This one apparently sat outside for some time. But it has good bones and will easily be fixed up. My son is very competent and can do conditionals and other needed work. He is especially good on composites. JMS Aviation Services at KMIT. He is on FB as well.

That's great to have an A&P in the family! Especially one familiar with Experimentals. Post some pics once ya'll get the panel upgrades done or the new paint. Always nice to see pics for inspiration of updates folks have done to their Express.
