Increased MGW

Post by xprsav8r » Fri Jul 12, 2019 10:14 am

Good morning.

I read this sentence in another post "increased gross weight of 3200lb up from 2895lb only came with the upgrade from the fiberglass main gear." Can anyone shed some light on this?

I have an S90 but didn't build it; I'm the 3rd owner. The data plate indicates MGW is 2895#. The previous owner upgraded the main gears from stock fibreglass to Grove aluminium. He said it reduced weight while being stronger. Does this meet the statement above? Also, where is this noted? I'd like to share it with my A&P for an upcoming W&B.

Thanks in advance.

Roger

Page 1 and continued on page 2 of the Copeland news letter No. 26, Nov 2001 talks about the increased GTW with the AL legs. If you cannot get or open the attachment message me and I'll send you the file. This article is straight from Larry Olsen when he was running things.

You need to validate you have the proper gear attach but the S90 should have them. Also, what engine do you have?

Thanks for sharing the attachment. Is there an archive of these newsletters somewhere? I'd be interesting in learning more. I purchased a POH from Darrell Peterson but it's rather generic. Historical details like this can lend insight into certain problems the S90 faced or other options available to consider.

To answer your question: I have a Continental IO-360 KB 6-CYL. I didn't see any limitations on engine size wrt the increased MGW.

Again, thanks for your help.

I'm not sure where I found the Express Link news letter scans. I have hard copies somewhere but I did not scan them. I could upload the files I have. I'm not sure if the scans are for all of them.

The IO-360 KB says it's rated for 195hp and 2600 rpm. The gear legs will handle #3200 but that does not mean you have enough HP for that weight. I dont recall any chart that said HP to gross weight but there may be one.
