Re: Pitot tube location

Should not make any difference, as long as you put it out toward the end, so no possibility of prop wash interference. That said, a big consideration in achieving accuracy is where you put your static ports. I wrote an extensive article on that and it includes Express specific data. https://www.kitp...

Re: Buying my 1st express.

Folks, this discussion is in the land of wizards and goblins! Get some real information! I built and own N49EX, a cruciform tail version with an I/O-390 210 horse engine and Hartzell three blade scimitar prop. The plane meets its advertised numbers and stalls clean about 63mph (yes, not kts!) and di...

My previous post - my computer did a strange thing appending an irrelevant email address to my name. Please disregard.

Re: so many nose gear leg collapses!

The nose gear strut that the original Wheeler company made when Ken was still there had serious strength problems. They were painted gray. When Larry Olson ran the company, he re-designed it with a much thicker tube and the vertical sheer plate at the bottom end, and they are black powder coat. I ha...

Re: Trim Tabs

I have the standard trim tab with the MAC servo, and it works very well. Plus with the G3X AP, it operates the servo to null out the elevator forces. I don't have any experience with bias springs, but intuitively my sense is that they may reduce some forces but can never compensate completely for al...

Re: Differences in express models

In the early days of the Express, it was discovered that the cruciform tail was subject to one nasty behavior under certain limited circumstances. Flying slow, below about 70mph, with no flaps and full rudder, the tail will eventually stall, leading to a very abrupt nose-over. While that sounds dras...

Re: Body Fairings.. Seat Sliders.

Like Kevin suggested, adding a linear actuator under the seat is the way to go. There are nice small ones available out there. I have a pair of rocker switches in the center console to adjust them. The other thing I did is to laminate the seat slides with 1/8th" by 2" wide teflon form McMa...

Re: Static port location

I did have a pitot mast which included the static ports, and found that after adding the G3X Touch autopilot, the AP hunted vertically. evidently the pitot integrated static ports deliver slightly varying pressure with changes in AOA, not noticeable on the altimeter, but causing AP instability. As a...

Re: linear actuator for flaps

Tried posting a response before, but somehow it disappeared! The plane is now up to about 1150 hours and going strong! I absolutely love the glass panel and can't say enough good things about the Garmin G3X Touch system, especially the autopilot, whose precision and stability are astonishing. And I ...
